Arriving at Devil’s Thumb Resort during a blizzard, Tara and I decided to have lunch and wait it out a bit before heading out and following the groomers on fresh trails.

This was our first time skiing at Devil’s Thumb and it quickly became one of our favorite resorts.

Unfortunately, we didn’t see any moose out in the woods where they were promised.

After skiing around for a while, and seeing the course setter out placing controls, we headed back to warm up in the hot tub.

Tara took her skis into the heated yurt to do her first solo-wax job on her sticks while I wandered around the resort taking photos.

The next morning we took part in the Rocky Mountain Orienteering Club‘s orienteering event. Tara and I both skied a short course (8-11 controls). My route took me 3.1 miles and just over 30 minutes. I’m told skiers should eventually be faster than runners, but I could definitely run a dry trail course quicker (I ran a 22:14 5k on roads at the beginning of the year and ran a 5k trail that Strava says I’ve got the course record for [that’ll be short-lived in Boulder]). Either way, it was fun to tackle a first orienteering event of the year. Full results from the Devil’s Thumb event.

I braved Friday afternoon I-70 traffic to reach Breckenridge and catch this year’s snow sculptures.

The colored lights were a recent addition to the displays.

Saturday morning I headed to Eldora’s Nordic Center to volunteer for a snow orienteering race.

Between the winds and not having skate skied in over a month I didn’t feel too motivated to get out and ski the course myself, so I concentrated on my registration duties and plan to both help out and race next weekend’s event.

In the middle of the month, Tara and I spent a weekend in Houston visiting relatives of hers. On the sight-seeing agenda was the Beer Can House.

Unfortunately the Orange Show was closed for renovations, but we did get to the Cullen Sculpture Garden and nearby Ginger Man pub.

Back home we engaged in a bit of running we also made it out downhill skiing a few days at Eldora and then had a two hour class to learn the fundamentals of curling.
